Entrance Hall and Staircase Design

The first metres of a home, and the route between floors

Midnight Portrait interior: the mirrored hall creates a clear sense of arrival, sequence and reflection, while leaving enough visual depth for a strong page hero

The entrance hall is the one room each visitor to a house is guaranteed to see, yet it is often furnished last, once the rooms that matter have claimed the budget. It exists to be crossed, a pause between the street and the rest of a life. As an interior designer, I treat it as the home's introduction. Done well, an entrance gives away one gesture, a material moment or a single striking object, and holds the rest in reserve. Ceiling height and door width are usually fixed by the architect, so the interior decides how those dimensions feel.

Materials carry much of that feeling. Natural stone and hand-finished plaster age well and reward a close look, and a double-height volume that feels corporate in builder-grade porcelain can feel calm and considered once its surfaces change. Lighting has to work after dark as well as by day, since a stairwell left unlit can make the whole arrival feel unfinished. A single console or artwork, placed with intent, often achieves more than a hall full of furniture, and it gives the eye somewhere to rest before the rest of the house unfolds.

The staircase is where structure and craft meet most visibly, and it is encountered each day for as long as the house stands. Each part answers a different sense: stone treads carry sound further while timber works more quietly, and the handrail is the surface each person in the house touches. A runner in wool and linen, held with brass stair rods, can soften a stone staircase underfoot while keeping its character. Because a staircase cannot be quietly reconsidered later, these decisions belong early in the design, alongside the architect's drawings.
