New Build Interior Design

Joining while the plans can still change

Tactile Light interior: the resolved kitchen shows architecture, cabinetry, lighting and finishes working as one planned interior rather than as an applied.

A new home offers a rare chance to design the interior and the architecture together. The right time to involve an interior designer is before the plans are fixed, while ceiling heights and window positions can still be shaped around how you want to live. As an interior designer, I work alongside architects and builders from that stage, so a furniture plan can inform where a doorway sits and a planned artwork can shape the lighting for a whole wall. These relationships are simple to resolve on paper and costly once construction is underway.

A new house also carries a risk of anonymity. Expensive finishes alone do not give a home its personality, and a specification developed without the owners in mind tends to feel like a display home however well it is built. Through the Personal Design Code, I identify what makes a client's taste distinctive, especially its most interesting contrasts, and carry that through the joinery and furnishing alike. The result is a new house that already feels as though it belongs to the people who will live in it.

The design phase for a new build typically runs eight to sixteen weeks from briefing to completed documentation, depending on scope. Drawings and schedules are prepared for pricing and construction, and during the build I visit site and answer design queries so the intent is protected. Long-lead pieces, including custom European furniture that can take sixteen to twenty-four weeks, are ordered early so they arrive in time. Materials are chosen with Brisbane's light and humidity in mind from the outset, and items are held in our warehouse until the house is ready.
