Kitchen and Dining Design in Brisbane

Rooms planned for how an evening actually moves

Chromatic Restraint interior: the complete kitchen shows cabinetry, work surfaces, appliances and lighting, giving kitchen planning its own visual and editorial territory
Gilded Bloom interior: the round dining table, tailored chairs and sculptural floral installation support a distinct page about scale, lighting, seating and.

In Brisbane, dinner rarely stays in the dining room. Guests gather at the kitchen island first, drift onto the terrace with a drink and find their way to the table later, and the evening seldom follows the floor plan. As an interior designer, I plan kitchen and dining spaces around that movement. A kitchen separated from the terrace by an awkward route keeps the host travelling all night, and a dining table that blocks the way to the garden means each movement interrupts someone's chair. These are small problems on paper. With twenty people in the house, they shape the whole evening.

The relationship between the rooms matters more than duplicating them. A complete outdoor kitchen is sometimes the right answer, but entertaining rarely improves simply because each activity has been repeated on the other side of the doors. Seating placed close enough to the interior keeps a gathering together, and furniture with more than one use earns its place, such as a generous ottoman or a banquette that seats six and absorbs more once occasional chairs are pulled in. Rooms that entertain well also scale, so the same table suits four people one week and a much larger gathering the next.

Lighting and sound complete the picture. The light needed to finish plating is not the light wanted once guests arrive, so kitchens and dining rooms need layers, with practical light where the work happens and lower pools around the table and seating. Stone floors and large areas of glazing can become tiring once a room fills with conversation, and rugs and heavy upholstery absorb a good deal of that sound. Joinery and stone are resolved together with the appliances, so the kitchen holds its composure at the moment it is working hardest.
